Plunderoptics
Nicole Galellis
Plunderphonics, coined in 1985 by musician John Oswald, is a term referring to hip hop trends of appropriating and altering (sampling and remixing) other artists songs to express an individual voice within the broad context of mass culture. Plunderoptics refers to Galellis’s similar approach with visual media: creating bright, evocative abstractions that start with references from everyday sights such as cartoons, ornament, advertising, tattoos, and nature. This exhibit showcases paintings and drawings, some of which are studies for lager works,to illustrate the artist’s creative process.
