Celebrate Fibre Arts
Focus on Fibre Art Association
10004-10032 103A Ave
Daily: 11 am - 8 pm
Enjoy demonstrations and exhibits of various Fibre Art techniques, both traditional and contemporary, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, with art projects that build community and tell the complex story of Canada’s people and places. Gain an appreciation for how fibre art skills, used long ago for warmth and decoration, are still used today for the same purposes.
Participate in hands on demonstrations and activities (times posted daily) based on different techniques each day, including spinning, weaving, felting, knitting, hand quilting, traditional rug hooking, and all kinds of stitching, with emphasis on the transition of traditional techniques into contemporary art- forms. Art exhibited expresses these skills, and each includes an Artist Statement indicating the artist’s interpretation and method.
History of Focus on Fibre Art Association
In 1996, Northlands Exhibition Association stopped funding the annual competition for crafts and fibre art. A group of volunteers involved with the Northlands show and The Edmonton Needlecraft Guild, Edmonton and District Rug Hooking Guild, and Edmonton and District Quilters Guild formed Focus on Fibre Art Association, incorporated in 1997 under the Societies Act. Leduc Black Gold Quilt Patch, The Edmonton Weavers’ Guild, Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts and Evergreen Spinners and Weavers Guild more recently joined FFAA.
The first juried exhibit was produced in 1998. The 10th exhibit, My Heritage, opened in May 2016 at UofA Extension Department in Enterprise Square Galleries and exhibited for 7 months in various venues. Focus on Fibre Art continues in 2018 with the biennial competition and exhibit themed ‘Climate Change.’
The aim of the FFAA is to encourage, foster and develop excellence and appreciation of fibre as an art form. Participating member groups are Edmonton Rug Hookers Guild; Quilters Guild; Needlecraft Guild; Weavers Guild; Black Gold Quilt Patch Guild; Alberta Council for Ukrainian Arts; Evergreen Spinners and Weavers Guild.
