Raylene Campbell

Raylene Campbell is an Edmonton-based sound and media artist, who embraces various creative practices including improvisation, composition, performance art, sound and image, public intervention, and Deep Listening. The focus of her creative process involves explorations of acoustic ecology, psychogeography, computer interactive technology, and audience interactivity.

Raylene Campbell’s improvised performance is built on a search for subtle sound textures and offers a unique musical experience mixing together various approaches from free improvisation and Deep Listening® to Musique concrète. She gently moves into chosen sonic spaces and takes time exploring and experimenting with the emerging materials of the improvisational moment. Through her Deep Listening practice, Raylene works extensively with tones triggered by the Therevox’s analog oscillators, studio recordings of freebass accordion improvisation, field recordings from various locations, and live processing. She improvises simple and complex tones, which dance throughout the space and resonate within the audience, creating a profound, visceral conversation between the performer and listeners.

The Writer’s Guild

Dan Davis, Saxophones

Brett Hansen, Guitar

Tyson Kerr, Piano and Rhodes

Josh McHan, Bass

Jamie Cooper, Drums

The Writers’ Guild is a jazz composers' collective featuring five of Edmonton's finest creative minds. The band uses the canvas of a traditional jazz quintet, blending musical influences old and new as they continually hone their craft into exciting, vital new music. Each composer in the collective has a unique writing style: Dan Davis’ compositions show a blend of traditional and modern jazz sounds, with catchy melodies over a backdrop of chords which would be right at home in Chris Potter’s latest release. Tyson Kerr’s music, influenced by prominent voices in the Toronto music scene such as Andrew Downing and David Braid, feel at times like vignettes from film and musical scores. Brett Hansen's style soars across genres and moods, finding just the right moment for a Bill Frisell musing or a full-on grunge rock explosion. Jamie Cooper's writing celebrates the contributions of greats like Roy Hargrove and J Dilla, bringing neo soul and hip hop to jazz. Rounding out the band is one of the strongest rhythm players in Canada: Josh McHan is the rock-solid foundation holding up all these diverse voices and styles. The Writers' Guild's debut album “Based on a True Story” (Chronograph Records) reached #1 on the Earshot! National Jazz charts , and was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award; they are currently developing compositions for their second studio album. As these composers comment, collaborate, and create each other's music in realtime, the Writers' Guild makes ink on paper fly.

Montuno West is an Alberta-based quartet dedicated to the Latin-Jazz tradition. By fusing Latin rhythms and song styles with jazz improvisation, Montuno West creates a sound that is electrifying and engaging to jazz, World, and Latin audiences alike.

The group is comprised of former members of Albertan Latin stalwarts, Bomba and Cumako. Between these two groups, a strong tradition of jazz-inspired Latin music has been common in Alberta over the last twenty years. Edmonton jazz musicians Chris Andrew and Rubim de Toledo join forces with Calgary-based Latin percussionists Raul Tabera and Luis Tovar to create a sound rooted in Cuban, Venezuelan, and Brazilian rhythm, mixed with lush musical arrangements, and compelling jazz-inspired improvisation.

In September of 2018, the group released their debut CD entitled, Tocar Tambor. The recording features NYC maintain trombonist Luis Bonilla (Village Vanguard Orchestra, Phil Collins, Mingus Dynasty Orchestra).
