ABOUT THE ARTIST
Yuanita Klatt is a self-taught artist who began painting at age 50. Through a lifelong appreciation of the stunning landscape and changing light of her home province, Yuanita began to translate her love of nature into vibrant works of art that capture the essence of Alberta’s diverse terrain and seasons.
Yuanita’s artistic journey is remarkable not just for its late start, but for her rapid development and success as a painter. Showing early promise, she received an Award of Merit at age 5 for a collage included in a province wide exhibition held at the prestigious Winnipeg Gallery of Art. More recently, she has created numerous commissions for the Highlands Art School, as well as for private collections and collectors. She is currently represented at the Art Gallery of Alberta gift shop where her small works are available for purchase.
In addition to painting, Yuanita is a multidisciplinary artist who continues to work as a hairstylist and makeup artist. Her 35 years of expertise in the beauty and fashion industry enriches her approach to fine art, where her knowledge of color theory and the three-dimensional form enhances her painting technique, allowing her to express herself in fresh and exciting ways. This unique blend of skills, along with her background in watercolour allows her to experiment with layers, textures, and hues, creating pieces that resonate with emotion and depth. These works invite viewers to connect with the beauty of the land and the light that is truly unique to the north of the 50th latitude.
Through her freelance work in the fashion industry she was introduced to photography, learning from professionals on set, which now informs her artistic practice. As she travels throughout the province she meticulously documents and observes the interplay between shadow and light, composition and form, which she later recreates in her studio.
As Yuanita continues to evolve her artistic voice, demonstrating that creativity has no age limit, her work not only represents her personal experiences but also invites viewers to experience the wonder of nature and the profound connection between humanity and the environment in the north of 50.
