ARTIST STATEMENT

Images and text are drawn directly on the leather-hard pots through a layer of white slip and wax - a technique called sgraffito - to reveal the iron-rich clay body beneath. Often, the incised line will be filled with a black underglaze pigment to lend the image a bold, graphic quality.

After the first or bisque firing, the pieces are painted with bright glaze colours and then the whole piece is dipped in a clear glaze to make it suitable for use and then fired a final time.

Although the process involved in creating this work is equal parts immediate and time consuming, I find it very rewarding, and it keeps me amused. I like to think that this line of work puts the “fun” in functional and hope it makes the viewer smile too.
