Final Week!

Monique Martin | Context is Everything

Context is Everything at the Melcor Building, 10117 Jasper Ave, Edmonton

Context is Everything is a sweeping multimedia installation by internationally recognized artist, Monique Martin. The exhibit runs until November 10 across several Downtown Edmonton venues. Martin’s work includes thousands of life-like dandelions and large-scale prints.

These unseasonal blooms will only appear for a short time more—be sure to catch them in familiar Downtown locations before they’re gone!

Fall Artist Takeover Series

The Fall Artist Takeover Series curated by Tasana Clarke (@exstepmom) and Sade Medos (@depechesade) has begun on The Works’ Instagram. Tune in every Wednesday and Saturday for new artist-generated content.

Here is a selection of this season’s posts:

October 10: Macha Abdallah @art.by.macha

“"Majesty", 2020, acrylic on canvas, 24x24
One of my favourite pieces I’ve done is of the Rwandan princess Emma Bakayishonga. Another black and white portrait I was able to bring to life with this contemporary take, using rich colours that convey her effortless regal elegance. Emma Bakayishonga is an icon who represents a standard of Rwandan beauty and femininity.”

October 17: Alfred Woods @ayefreydo

“Future Creatives x Hope and Optimism
These are two graphics I co-design with my good friend @raelandmendoza
Over the past year I’ve become more comfortable with illustrating and put that to use this year. I really love the straight forward feel a bold, simple illustration has so I tend to lean that way. Starting with a complicated idea and stripping it down to very essential parts”

The Places

Arts on the Ave, in Collaboration with The Places, presents large outdoor sculptures on loan from the Vancouver Biennale.

Love Your Bean, Cosimo Cavallaro, Alberta Avenue (SW Corner - 92 St. & 118 Ave)

“Love your bean” was a mantra that Cavallaro told himself while he worked on the highly polished fibreglass resin of the sculptures, inspiring a deeper focus on the nature of love, shape and colour.

New to Arts on the Ave, Outdoor Sculpture Installations

Walking Figures by Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz

In front of the Telus Building (SE Corner -  88 St. & 118 Ave.)

Walking Figures is a group of headless, cast-iron figures. They appear to be walking aimlessly without sight, and the somber tone makes reference to both time and loss.

The Meeting by Chinese born artist Wang Shugang

(SE Corner 92 St. & 118 Ave.)

Red figures are placed in a circle, static and crouching with cupped hands, open to various interpretations, from one of thoughtful contemplation to one of latent energy ready to leap up.

Alley of Light Art Boxes

Featuring Critical Pieces by Monique Martin

Images from the body of work Critical Pieces by Monique Martin are now on display in the Alley of Light Art Boxes through winter. The images presented are taken from original 72” x 24” linocuts, printed on vellum. These same linocuts were also made into handwoven rugs in Nepal.

Humans use disparaging and derogatory self-talk and negative internal conversations at times.  We are often hypercritical and yield to societal standards that are perpetually changing.

Dandelion pieces, rather than the whole, are used as a symbol of critical pieces. Each person is essential, valued and a critical part of other people’s lives.

—Monique Martin

We encourage you to check out Monique’s vibrant work on the south wall of the historic Armstrong Block building in Downtown Edmonton.

The Art & Design in Public Places Program and its various project partners launched the Alley of Light Art Boxes initiative on 4th Street Promenade, Armstrong Block Building (South Wall, 10125 – 104 Street) in October 2018
