"Create Your World"

Marshall Weber
the shallows

Feature artist Marshal Weber is an installation artist based in New York. His sculpture, Tilted Globe was the chosen image of the 1998 theme " Create your World." Tilted Globe represents various regions of the world through cultural associations making the claim that history is not in the past, but continually evolves through the present.

the shallows, Weber's installation, was set within the box of a refrigerator truck as a recreation of the ice-bound ship, the Erebus, from the 1847 Franklin Expedition. Within the walls of the installation, embedded in ice, were various found objects from Edmonton. Together, these objects were suggestive of the experience of an ice shipwreck. As a re-created world, the shallows tied local experience to historical fact. The result for the viewer is then a re-created experience that he must interpret for himself.
