Ric Kokotovich
Reclamations

This body of work began as a photographic record of the waste created at or near abandoned industrial sites in Canada and the United States. In his journeys, Ric Kokotovich, an Alberta artist and filmmaker, saw the decay of man-made environments, and beneath that, an undeniable beauty. He witnessed nature trying to reclaim some of these elements originally created for the “betterment of man.” Through the use of collage, Kokotovich constructs images that simulate both the beauty and the decay. These constructs are symbolic references to the dissonance that exists in these environments.

Lucent: A Survey of Contemporary Canadian Glass
Curators: Tina Oldknow, Norman Faulkner, Carole Pilon

The molecular structure of glass may be random, but Lucent is a solid example of why this ancient medium has earned respect as an art form. This traveling exhibition includes a cross-section of the finest in Canadian Glass. The Glass Art Association of Canada has organized a juried exhibition that includes over 50 artists, showcasing the distinctive and diverse works in Canadian glass.

Ken Rinaldo
Autopoiesis
Artificial life robotic sculpture installation

Autopoiesis is an interactive artificial life series of robotic “arms” that react to their environment and modify their behaviours based on both the presence of the participants in the exhibition and the communication between each separate sculpture. The arms talk with each other through a hardwired network and audible telephone tones, which are a musical language for the group. Rinaldo, an artist, theorist and professor at Ohio State University creates interactive multimedia installations that blur the boundaries between the organic and inorganic. Autopoiesis (meaning “self making”) was commissioned by the Kiasma Museum in Helsinki, Finland as part of Outoaly, an Alien Intelligence Exhibition.

Wearable Art: Object and Body
Curator: Dee Fontans
June 24 – July 4

There is glamour with a touch of irony in wearable art garments, a statement which blurs creative boundaries. Inspiration for the works may come from words, nature, architecture and the body. The work may deal with issues of beauty, identity, culture, body image, gender roles and perception. Wearable art stimulates and excites the visual senses through colour and movement, the manipulation of shape and the exaggeration of body.
