Our Mandate

The Works International Visual Arts Society is a not-for-profit charitable organization whose projects have included local, regional, national and international programs and events that combine the resources of public and private sectors with Canada’s cultural community. Our organization works to advance the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in Canada and provides artists, designers and the public a forum for exchanging ideas through The Works Art & Design Festival. Entering its 33rd year, The Festival is the most unique, free event of its kind. It attracts artists, designers and patrons from around the world – boosting the city’s energy and imagination for 13 days each summer. Edmonton also enjoys The Works Society’s programs year-round through its education programs and the Art & Design in Public Places Program which leaves permanent art and design in public places.

Make a meaningful contribution to our Community!

The Works Society is seeking motivated volunteers to join the Board of Directors. This voluntary governing role is an exciting way to apply your skills, meet and network with a variety of people in various industries, and make a meaningful contribution to the cultural community within Edmonton and Canada.

The Role of the Works Society Board of Directors

The Board of Directors for The Works Society can consist of three (3) or more Executive Members that are responsible for active oversight in the organization’s governance. Board Members generally serve for two to three years.

The Board of the Works Society will have:

  • Passion and commitment for the arts and cultural sector;

  • Knowledge of accounting, investments and financial literacy;

  • Experience in dealing with ethics and legal issues;

  • Knowledge and experience in areas of information technology, human resources, marketing and communications;

  • Political experience, and experience in advisory programs;

  • Expertise in the field of governance

Key Considerations

1.       Representation – the Board of Directors will reflect the community it serves. The Board will create a diverse and inclusive organizational environment.

2.       Vision – the Board is responsible for guidance on the strategy and vision of the organization and shall do its best to anticipate variables that impact operations and be prepared to decisively adapt strategy to mitigate risk.

3.       Engaged Performance ­– The Board will represent the highest level of engagement and will be evaluated annually for its contributions.

4.       Fundraising ­– the Board will set the example for resourcefulness.

5.       Recruitment – the Board will constantly be engaging potential Board Members.

Further Details

  • The Board generally meets at least four times per year in Edmonton, and with additional conference calls and committee work - the average total annual time commitment is 6 weeks

  • Members are expected to attend each Board meeting

  • Members of the Board receive no compensation. Members are reimbursed for reasonable, authorized and substantial expenses while undertaking these duties

  • The Works Society Code of Conduct on behalf of the Board of Directors is based on principles and procedures established in the Canadian Conflict of Interest Act. These are binding on each member of the Board
