about the artist

Madeline LeBlanc is a self-taught artist whose practice consists of drawing, dress-up, film and painting. Creating in the spur of the moment is how she likes to work best. Her mission as an artist is to create good art that invokes a sense of play, curiosity, nostalgia, or wonder. It is important for Madeline to make her work visually accessible, in that the viewer does not necessarily need to read an artwork description to fully engage and understand the work. This is in line with Madeline’s aim to create art that can be enjoyed by all ages and academic levels.

artist statement

My work explores creating through intuition. I do not plan my pieces prior to their creation. This style of creating emerged through my interest in the visual work of children. These early scribbles deserve more attention than they receive, given that they reveal to us the inner world of a child. There is an evident movement and rhythm in the artwork of children that is often written off as mere “scribbles.” Yet I am interested in how these “scribbles” develop over time through aging and differing states of mind. As an artist, I explore the visual products of my own cognition by creating artwork through different emotive states, physical states, restrictive states, and sensory states of freedom.
