“CommUNITY”

About Alexis Marie Chute’s artwork

“CommUNITY: Physically Distanced, Socially Inseparable" is a photo-art project created during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022). Photographing community members with my 30+ year old Polaroid camera, I utilized mixed media, such as nail polish, paint, and pens, to draw onto the photos. In 2021, the project expanded internationally to include friends, colleagues, and family who sent photographs of themselves, which I processed onto film using a digital darkroom. The artwork allowed me to connect with my community in new ways.

THE EDMONTON DOWNTOWN BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

PUBLIC ART INITIATIVE

The Works, The Places, the Edmonton Downtown Business Association, with the support of Prairies Economic Development Canada, the City of Edmonton, and corporate partners, launched this public art initiative in September 2022.  Several murals and backlit boxes permanently installed in the illuminated alley allows for various artworks/artists to be exhibited on a rotating basis.  This colourful attraction creates a special place, inviting repeat visits from families, individuals living/working in the downtown, as well as visitors to Edmonton, and connects them with our local creative community.

Project Partners: The Edmonton Downtown Business Association, The Works International Visual Arts Society; The Art & Design in Public Places Program; Government of Canada under the auspices of PrairiesCan; City of Edmonton; Winter City Edmonton; Arttec Signs.
